What the Bible says about hell

September 15, 2013 by admin

BibleandhellThe subject of today’s message is one of those things that we don’t really know what to believe about it, so very often we don’t talk about it. Every single person will most likely have very different thoughts about the topic of Hell. It is important to sift through the ideas to see what the Bible tells us.

I like the story that is told of a chaplain who reported to a new position during WW2. Upon arrival some of the men came to see him and asked him this question; Do you believe in a literal hell? When he replied that he did not. The men asked him to resign and he asked them why. Their response to him was: If there is no Hell then we don’t need you and if there is a Hell we don’t want you to lead us astray. I think the point is well made.

People don’t like to talk about hell, and we don’t hear many sermons on the topic. But even Jesus spent time talking about this subject.

He spoke of Heaven only once but on the topic of Hell he spoke about it eleven times. So, we should not avoid the topic but instead understand what Jesus is telling us because as we said last week what we believe about death and eternity should determine how we live now.

Forgotten God concludes

March 7, 2013 by admin

This Sunday we will conclude our series called “Forgotten God” which is about looking at the Holy Spirit.

No matter what you have been doing or going through this week, we all have the choice each day to depend on ourselves, to live comfortably, and to try and control our own life. Or we can live, as we were created to live – as a temple of the Holy Spirit of God, as a person dependent on Him, desperate for God the Spirit to show up and make a difference.

My prayer in doing this series has been that it would not merely add to your knowledge. Having a great knowledge about something does not necessarily equal greater spirituality. Knowledge can lead to greater intimacy and a deeper relationship with God, but this is not an automatic effect. The Bible tells us in James that if we know the good we ought to do and don’t do it, we sin (James 4:17) In other words if we stock up knowledge without applying it to our lives we are sinning. Not my words but God’s.

I pray that that you have not merely gained knowledge. Instead as you have been learning, you have been challenged and changed to be the people we’ve been created to be by the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Rom 14;17)

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Andrew

PS If you are away this week, keep safe and alert on the roads.
